Off-grid photovoltaics
An off-grid photovoltaic (PV) solution is a power supply system which is
not connected to the main network. These systems can serve multiple users,
which are referred to as mini-grid, or single use. Electricity generated
by the off-grid system is directly consumed and is not fed into the main
electricity grid. Off-grid systems comprise a battery backup which stores
energy for use when the sun is not shining and the PV generator is not
producing.
Off-grid systems can also integrate various sources
of energy in order to provide a more reliable energy
supply. For instance a PV generator can be combined
with a wind generator to offer a complete solution.
Such systems are called hybrid systems.
Off-grid
solutions are perfect for areas without direct access
to the public electricity grid. Often, costs to expand
the public grid at a particular site are uneconomical
and constrained by limited infrastructure. An off-grid
system is a much simpler and more affordable solution
to generate electricity. Off-grid PV solutions are
ideal for rural electrification, especially in developing
countries and remote locations.
Benefits
Reduce
cost for operations and maintenance of generator set
and fuel
Reduce diesel consumption
leading to a cleaner and healthier environment
Provide
water, pumping and purification to rural areas
thus lowering illness which can be a result
of poor water quality
Off-grid systems can be effectively and economically
applied to various industries.
